Behind the wheel

Täsch — the vehicle gateway. Zermatt itself is closed to private cars, so Täsch is where every rental begins and ends. Parking is available here for the short onward transfer into the resort, making it the natural point for airport or hotel-linked handover.

Mattertal, the valley road. The approach from Visp through Stalden and St. Niklaus climbs steadily through the Matter Valley to Täsch. The road narrows in places and gains altitude quickly, which favours AWD in winter and rewards a slower, deliberate pace in summer.

Saastal, the neighbouring valley. A detour east of the main route leads into the Saas valley, a separate alpine system with its own resort town. Guests staying a full ski week often use a day here to vary the driving and the scenery without a long return leg.

Visp and the Rhône plain. Visp marks the point where the Matter Valley meets the wider Rhône valley, and it is the usual staging point for guests arriving from Geneva or Zurich before the climb south. Traffic and road character change noticeably above this point.

Furka and Simplon passes. Both high passes lie within reach of the region and draw summer GT driving for their sustained climbs and open sightlines. They close through winter and reopen only once snow clearance allows, so timing matters for anyone planning a pass run.
