Julier Pass toward Chur. The most direct link between St. Moritz and the Swiss lowlands, climbing through open switchbacks before dropping into the Domleschg valley. An AWD SUV handles the gradient and shoulder-season weather changes with more composure than a low-slung sports car; allow winter tyres to be fitted between November and April.
Maloja Pass and Val Bregaglia. A short, sharp descent out of the Engadin into the granite-walled valley leading toward Chiavenna in Italy. Popular as a summer convertible route once the switchbacks are dry; parking at the Maloja viewpoint is limited, so an early or late departure avoids coach traffic.
Bernina Pass toward Poschiavo. One of the more dramatic alpine roads in the region, running past glaciers before dropping toward the Italian border at Tirano. Best driven between June and September when the pass is reliably clear; a mid-power convertible or GT suits the long sweeping bends better than a heavier SUV.
St. Moritz lakeside and hotel district. The town centre and the shoreline of Lej da San Murezzan sit close to the main hotels, including the Kulm and Badrutt's Palace area. Useful for short evening drives or arrivals where valet parking is available; a compact luxury sedan or coupe is easier to place here than a full-size SUV.
Zurich Airport transfer route
Zurich Airport transfer route. Most guests collect their vehicle on arrival into Zurich and drive south through Chur before joining the Julier or Albula route into the Engadin. An AWD SUV is the practical choice for this transfer, particularly outside the summer months, given the altitude change and variable road conditions en route.
