Interlaken. A short, direct drive down the valley to the town between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Useful base for train transfers, shopping streets and lakeside hotels; parking is straightforward outside peak summer weekends.
Lauterbrunnen Valley Approach. The road into the valley narrows and fills with coach traffic in high season, so an early start helps. A capable, well-sized car makes the switchbacks and roadside pull-offs near the waterfalls easier to manage than a rental van or coach transfer.
Grosse Scheidegg Pass. A mountain road linking Grindelwald toward Meiringen, closed to general traffic in winter and demanding in shoulder season. When open, it rewards a car with genuine AWD and winter tyres rather than summer-only rubber.
Lucerne Day Loop. A longer route over the Brünig or via Interlaken, suited to a full day out. Covered parking near the old town and lakefront makes it practical to leave the car and walk once you arrive.
Brienz and Ballenberg. A quieter lakeside stretch past Brienz, with the open-air Ballenberg museum nearby. Roads are gentler here than the passes above Grindelwald, making it a relaxed stretch for a car built more for comfort than mountain grip.
